In late October 2020, a group of volunteers from the Friends of Rosin Creek constructed a new rain garden to capture the runoff near Fairview Park on Rosin Creek.
The site of the rain garden is on the creek near where it meets the Chester River. The park is owned by the Chester Harbor Property Owners Association (CHPOA), which has been an enthusiastic supporter of the project and the Friends of Rosin Creek. The CHPOA contributed $200 to the construction of the project. Other contributors included the Shore Rivers environmental group and several local homeowners. Mike McConnell, owner of a native plants wholesale company near Baltimore, contributed a number of plants and shrubs to the project.
About twenty volunteers worked in small groups over two weekends and practiced social distancing while the construction was under way. More than 40 native plants were planted.
The rain garden is expected to be a popular site for visitors and residents along the creek. An interpretive panel is planned to explain to park visitors how rain gardens work.
A rain garden is a planted depression in the landscape that collects and allows rainwater runoff from hard surfaces to be absorbed. Rain gardens are planted with native plants, and include a soil media and mulch. Click on the link below to learn more about rain gardens from the University of Maryland Extensiion.
